GEGIS, the dangerous goods information system

GEGIS, the dangerous goods information system for the Port of Hamburg has been developed by DAKOSY on behalf of the FHH specially for the safety and monitoring of dangerous goods transportation. It is operated in the DAKOSY computing centre. GEGIS gives the harbour police and fire service an accurate and up-to-the-minute overview of all movements of dangerous goods to, in and from the harbour area.

Dangerous goods notifications are obligatory

Since 1997, it has been necessary to comply with the Harbour Safety Ordinance, according to which all companies involved in handling dangerous goods (line agents/brokers, quay operators) are obliged to report the dangerous goods movements they make electronically to GEGIS. In addition, the Internal Waters (Entering Requirements) Ordinance also applies, according to which the government's central Registration Office in Cuxhaven must also be notified. Both ordinances are harmonized in such a way that the notification to Cuxhaven is performed at the same time as the GEGIS registration.

The dangerous goods notifications for the ports of Hamburg, Bremen and Bremerhaven can be made both directly in the dialog via the GEGIS Internet application as well as by EDIFACT (in the Protect formats 95A and 98B). PROTECT can be used to also send dangerous goods notifications from GEGIS for the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Felixstowe and Le Havre.

Regulations & material databases

A large number of regulations and special points must be observed when working with dangerous goods. Various material and regulation databases are therefore integrated in GEGIS, these providing the companies involved and authorities with comprehensive information and help on damage limitation. The material data modules provide information on the risk at accidents, first-aid measures and combating the consequences of the accident. The regulations provide all carriers (sea, road, rail, inland waterway, air) with information concerning classification, identification, material properties and packaging regulations for the dangerous goods transport and transshipment (per carrier).

Stowage & segregation

The Stowage & Segregation module is to be emphasized here. This set of regulations, also available separately, deals with the stowage and segregation regulations. The customer can call up all stowage and segregation regulations for any dangerous goods. The system also checks - assisted by graphics - which dangerous goods may be grouped together in a container, for example, and when segregation regulations apply.

Play it safe: Minimize the risk and opt for a reliable IT system: GEGIS - the secure way for hazardous goods transport.
