EDI

Maximum effectiveness through electronic data exchange in logistics

The idea of electronic data exchange between business partners is not new. This concept has been continually redefined for over 40 years. And depending on the status of the discussion, ever more new terms are being invented for this: While it was data remote transmission in the 1970s and into the 1980s, the term EDI (electronic data interchange) emerged at the end of the 80s, with the aim of facilitating international discussion. Since the 90s, terms such as B2B, B2C and G2C (business to business, business to customer, government to customer) have increasingly come to the fore, these narrowing the term EDI to the specific participants. Of course, the efforts towards standardization were of much more interest for the international dimensions of the idea. Standards for the different areas were gradually developed under the generic term EDIFACT (EDI for Finance, Administration, Commerce and Transport). From as early as the middle of the 1980s, DAKOSY has been involved in the development of transport-specific EDIFAFCT messages via various standards committees.

What is regarded as a recognized statement today, had to be meticulously formulated and derived in the 1980s: EDI data exchange enables faster processing times. Furthermore, electronic data transfer also ensures that the latest status information over the entire supply chain is available at all times. The planning and scheduling reliability is therefore enhanced for all transport partners. As there is now no longer any need for manual data logging, this entails tremendous cost saving potentials, e.g. by reducing errors or avoiding media discontinuity and multiply logged data. EDI is of enormous importance for logistics companies in particular, whose business processes are largely repetitive. This is because automating entire business processes plays a crucial role in cost reduction.

A relatively new term in this environment is the so-called single window. As a single window for logistics, DAKOSY provides its customers with diverse EDI services, corresponding to the various customer requirements. There are customers who develop and operate their own EDI-compatible software solutions, while implementing the EDI interfaces developed by DAKOSY. Other customers swear by the SaaS solutions of DAKOSY, which can also be used to handle all issues associated with transport and logistics (e.g. haulage processing or customs clearance). In the past few years, DAKOSY has increasingly offered Internet-based solutions as well, which make it easier for smaller and medium-sized companies to utilize the advantages of electronic data communication. Of course, individually customized EDI projects are also supported by DAKOSY. As a full service provider in the area of EDI, DAKOSY also offers conversion and validation services besides purely store and forward services, thereby ensuring optimum refinement of the data.
